As a result of the Lockdown in March 2020, 87,000 cases of gender-based violence and interpersonal violence were reported, a significant increase from pre-COVID-19. There were several factors contributing to the increase in GBVF cases in South Africa, including the availability and consumption of alcohol, job losses, financial dependence, psychological distress, and emotional imbalances during the lockdown. As a result of their limited mobility, women and children were more exposed to the aggressors at home, where varying hostile power dynamics prevail, making it difficult for them to find any type of support and aid.
Break The Silence
WTF 2020-2021
Campaign Execution
During the following year, we launched a campaign to combat gender-based violence and femicide. As long as we remove the confusion and discomfort surrounding this topic and recognize its importance, more and more people in need can be educated about the signs of domestic violence, prevention can be encouraged, and assistance can be provided.
There will be more victims who will be able to stand up comfortably and use their voice if we view it more as an epidemic rather than something that can be ignored. We must have and continue to have this discussion over and over again; it cannot be ignored and shoved under the rug, as that leads to silence. There is only one thing that can be learned from this article and that is that silence always hides the violence. Surely there must be an end to this situation.
